PerliShade Privacy Policy

Effective 22 September 2026

Effective date: 22 September 2026 · Applies to the PerliShade app for Android (package com.perlicom.perlishade) and to the PerliShade desktop app for Linux.

1. Summary

  • PerliShade paints over your screen; it never reads it. The warm tint is a coloured window drawn on top of whatever you are doing. The app cannot see, capture, record or inspect what is underneath, and it has no screen-recording, screenshot or accessibility permission of any kind.
  • Your settings stay on your device. Presets, warmth, schedule and break reminders are stored in the app's own storage on your phone or computer. We do not receive them.
  • No account, and no location permission. There is no sign-up and no sign-in. Sunset and sunrise are worked out offline from a city you pick from a list built into the app — PerliShade never asks Android for your location.
  • Ads are provided by Google AdMob. The free Android version shows a banner at the bottom of the Settings screen, and occasionally a full-screen ad at a natural break — never over the filter, over the break overlay, or while you are adjusting a setting. Google collects device identifiers and related data to show and measure ads. In the EU, EEA and UK you are asked for consent before personalised ads are shown.
  • PerliShade Pro is bought through Google Play. We never see your card or payment details.

2. Who we are

PerliShade is published by Perlicom Systems Limited, a company registered in Ireland under company number 546999 ("we", "us"). For the limited personal data that we process ourselves (see sections 5 and 6) we are the data controller. Contact: support@perlicom.com.

Google acts as an independent controller for the data its advertising and Google Play services collect, under Google's own privacy policy (policies.google.com/privacy).

3. What the app does on your device

  • The filter. PerliShade draws a semi-transparent coloured layer over the display to warm it (1000–6500 K) and to dim it below the panel's own minimum. On Android that layer is a system overlay window, which is why the app asks for the special access "Display over other apps" (SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW). It is a one-way permission: the app can draw on top of other apps, it cannot look into them.
  • The ongoing notification. So the tint survives you swiping the app out of recents, the overlay is held by a foreground service, which Android requires to show a notification while it runs. The notification's buttons (turn off, change preset) are handled entirely on the device.
  • Starting again after a reboot or an update. The app notes on the device whether the filter was on, so it can come back afterwards. Nothing about this leaves the phone.
  • Your settings. Presets you create, the warmth and dim you chose, the schedule, the city you picked, the break-reminder options and whether the filter is currently on are all stored in the app's private storage (Android SharedPreferences, or a configuration file on Linux). Uninstalling the app, or clearing its storage in Android Settings > Apps > PerliShade > Storage, deletes them.
  • Sunset and sunrise. The schedule is calculated by the app itself from the latitude and longitude of the place you picked, using standard astronomy maths. There is no location permission in the app, no GPS, and no request to any location service.
  • Break reminders. The 20-20-20 reminder is a timer in the app. It does not watch what you are doing; on desktop it can pause while a full-screen window is in front, which it learns from the window manager on your own machine.
  • Sharing the app. If you use "Share this app", Android's own share sheet opens and you choose where the link goes. We are not told, and no contacts are read.
  • Permissions the app does not have. No camera, no microphone, no contacts, no photos or files, no location, no screen capture, no accessibility service, no call or SMS access.

4. Data collected by Google services in the app

4.1 Google AdMob (advertising, free Android version)

The free version of PerliShade for Android shows ads in two places only: a banner at the bottom of the Settings screen, and occasionally a full-screen ad at a natural break — when you leave a screen you have finished with. PerliShade never places an ad over the filter itself, over the break overlay, or over a control you are adjusting, and the full-screen ad is rate-limited so it cannot become a recurring interruption. To choose, deliver and measure those ads and to prevent ad fraud, the Google Mobile Ads SDK collects and sends to Google:

  • device identifiers: the Android advertising ID and the app set ID;
  • your IP address, from which an approximate location (for example, country or city) is derived. PerliShade itself does not request GPS or precise location;
  • ad interactions: which ads were shown, viewed and tapped, and app launches;
  • diagnostics from the ads SDK, and basic device and app information (device model, Android version, app version, language).

Consent in the EU, EEA and UK. Before ads load in these regions, the app shows Google's consent message (Google's User Messaging Platform, which follows the IAB Transparency & Consent Framework). If you do not consent to personalised ads, Google shows non-personalised or limited ads, which still use data for purposes such as frequency capping, measurement and fraud prevention. To change your choice later, use the ad choices entry in PerliShade Settings > Privacy where it is shown (Google requires one in these regions). You can also clear the app's storage (Android Settings > Apps > PerliShade > Storage > Clear storage), after which the consent message is shown again the next time ads load — note that this also deletes your presets and schedule.

Advertising ID controls. You can reset or delete your advertising ID, or opt out of personalised ads, at any time in Android Settings (on most phones: Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Ads, or Settings > Google > Ads). You can also manage Google ad personalisation at myadcenter.google.com.

Learn more in Google's page How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.

Buying PerliShade Pro removes all advertising — both the banner and the full-screen ad — so no further ads are requested for your device. The Linux desktop version contains no advertising SDK at all.

4.2 Google Play Billing (PerliShade Pro)

PerliShade Pro is a one-off in-app purchase — not a subscription, with nothing to renew or cancel — handled entirely by Google Play. Google processes your payment under the Google Payments privacy notice. We never receive your card or bank details. The app checks the purchase on your device and remembers the result there, so Pro keeps working offline and can be restored on a new phone from the same Google account. Google gives us a limited order record through the Google Play Console (such as an order number, date, product, price and country, but not your name or payment details), which we use for accounting, tax and refunds.

5. Our own connections

  • Update check. The app fetches a small version file from assistant.perlicom.com to see whether a newer version exists. The request carries no identifier, account or device ID; like any web request, our server sees your IP address and a standard user-agent, which appear only in short-lived server logs kept for security and troubleshooting. (In the version installed from Google Play, updates come from Play instead.)
  • Optional usage counts. Settings > Privacy contains "Count which features I use". It is off by default. If you switch it on, the app counts actions such as "the filter was turned on" or "a preset was applied". The counts are stored only on your device and are not sent to us or to anyone else; switching the option off erases them. They never include a screenshot, a window title, your schedule or your location.

That is the complete list. PerliShade has no account system and no backend of its own: we do not receive your settings, your presets, your schedule, the city you picked, your files, your contacts or your location, and nothing you do in the app is uploaded to us.

6. What we hold, why, and our lawful bases

ProcessingWhoLawful basis (GDPR Art. 6)

Retention. Order records are kept as long as Irish tax law requires (currently six years). Support e-mails are kept while needed to deal with your request and then deleted. Server logs are rotated after a short period. Data collected by Google is retained under Google's policies. Everything the app itself stores lives on your device until you delete it.

International transfers. Google may process data outside the EEA. Google relies on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses for such transfers.

Security. All network connections made by the app use encryption (HTTPS/TLS).

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use anything the app does on your screen for advertising or any other purpose.

7. Your rights (GDPR)

If you are in the EU, EEA or UK you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or port your personal data, to object to processing based on legitimate interests, and to withdraw consent at any time (without affecting processing before the withdrawal). Because we hold almost no data about you, most requests will concern Google: you can exercise them directly through your Google account and Android ad settings, or e-mail us at support@perlicom.com and we will help. We reply within one month.

You have the right to lodge a complaint with the Irish Data Protection Commission (www.dataprotection.ie) or with the supervisory authority where you live or work.

8. California privacy rights (CCPA / CPRA)

In the last 12 months, the following categories of personal information were collected through PerliShade, by Google's SDKs: identifiers (advertising ID, app set ID, IP address); internet or other electronic network activity (ad views and taps, diagnostics); approximate geolocation derived from IP address; and, if you buy Pro, commercial information (the purchase record). No sensitive personal information is collected.

Sale and sharing. We do not sell personal information for money. However, because the free app uses Google AdMob, the disclosure of identifiers, ad interactions and approximate location to Google for personalised advertising may be considered "sharing" for cross-context behavioural advertising, and may be considered a "sale" under the CCPA's broad definition. We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of consumers under 16.

Your choices. You can opt out of this sale or sharing by deleting your advertising ID or turning on "opt out of ads personalisation" in your Android ad settings (see 4.1), by buying PerliShade Pro (which removes ads), or by e-mailing support@perlicom.com with the subject "Do Not Sell or Share". You also have the right to know and access, delete and correct your personal information, and to limit the use of sensitive personal information (we have none). We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights. An authorised agent may make a request on your behalf; we may ask for proof of authorisation.

9. Children

PerliShade is intended for adults and is not directed at children or anyone under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has used the app and data has been collected about them, contact us at support@perlicom.com and we will help you have it removed.

10. Changes to this policy

We will update this page if the app or the law changes, and change the effective date above. If a change materially affects how your data is used, we will also tell you in the app or on the Google Play listing.
